Recreation
All river and pond accesses are privately owned.  The people, the government, owns the water, but the land is owned and taxes paid privately. Please ask permission to fish or swim and be considerate of local landowners. They rarely receive direct benefit from tourism, but often experience the problems. Pack away your trash. Thank you!!

       GOLFING

We have a wonderful 9 hole grass green golf course with watered fairways and driving range. 1/2 mile south of Thedford west of the Veterans Memorial Highway 83.

While polishing your handicap and perfecting your swing, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the town and the Middle Loup River valley that runs through it. A vista of the majestic sandhills enfolds you with their ancient solitude.

Non members welcome with all day green fees of $10, weekends are $15. Rental carts are available.

Stop in and enjoy the results of a group working together for the betterment of their community and the future of the area. Our golf course is just one more example of Thedford continuing to grow. Proving we are and continue to be, a productive and viable community.

   FISHING

We are very lucky to be located over a very rich vein of gravel and small rock. The results are there are six gravel pit ponds up and down the Middle Loup River valley within five miles of Thedford. Four of them were mined in the late 50's. The banks are healed over with lush native blue grass and wild flowers. Another example of our gravel miners and land owners having community pride and foresight. These fishing ponds are a big piece of the Thedford area treasure pie.

Novice and master fisherman, young and old have a wonderful time jigging for that five pound bass that got away last fall. All of the ponds are fully stocked with bass, blue gill, perch, and sun fish. We've even heard some young men of the area introduced some walleye in the 90's.

Bring your pole, sit on the lush green bank. Look down through the clear clean sandhill water and watch the minnows. Lay back and gaze up at the smog free sky, did you hear the bullfrog? See that doe with her fawn on the far bank? It doesn't matter if you ever put your hook in the water, our ponds are a paradise right out Thedfords back door. A wonderful place to clear your mind, stretch your legs and relax. Unless you snag one of those walleye or bass, then you'll have a fun fight on your hands.

Dismal River 3TUBING AND SWIMMING THE RIVER

The Middle Loup river is ground fed from the Ogalala Aquifer. Pure clean refreshing spring water. When the temperatures soar, you will find children and adults alike cooling off in its pristine waters.

Go to the local gas stations and rent  inner tubes for a couple of dollars, plot your trip, leave a vehicle at your get out site, go upstream and jump in. Sit back and relax and enjoy the peaceful solitude of the sandhills. With the water gentle gurgling, the wild flowers draping the banks, you can view the geological evolution of the area on the sand banks the river has been forming for millions of years. If you're quiet enough, you'll be able to see the wild life in their natural habitat. Don't forget to take your sunscreen.

BIRD AND WILD LIFE WATCHING

The rivers, ponds and marsh lands of the area attract many migratory and native birds. The sandhill crane stops here for a drink on the way to their breeding grounds on the Platte River Valley.

The call of the meadowlark and native pheasant can be heard across the land. The golden eagle nests in the trees along the rivers and fishes in the ponds. The unique sounds of the grouse booming vibrate across the hills every spring. Wild geese nest and breed here before teaching their young how to fly so they can go back north. Many species of ducks live in the area year round. Trumpeter swan Swanshave started to reinhabit the marsh ponds of the area. Bald eagles are native and live here year round, fishing the ponds and springs.

SITE-SEEING

Thedford Nebraska is truly in the middle of everything!!

150 miles west of the middle of the USA, we are center on the
Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway that has been deemed one of the 10 most
scenic roads in the country. We are on the portal of the
Loup Rivers Scenic Byway and we are in the middle of the Veterans of foreign Wars memorial Hwy, and CNATCA, the Trade Corridor.   17 miles east is   the largest man made forest in the US, Bessey National Forest. The beautiful historic Dismal River is 16 miles south, and the beginning of the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge
begins just over 30 miles to the north.

Welcome to !STORMspeakericon.gif (1012 bytes) CHASING

People from all over the world come to the area to watch the building of our summer storms. High vantage points on a sandhill road gives a multi mile panoramic view. Although it is extremely rare for a tornado to touch down in the area, the storm clouds build over us and move south east before touching down.

Keep track of the weather at the University of Nebraska Climatology Site,NEVIT.
